Understanding Payroll Taxes and FLSA Compliance: Join This Free Online Workshop on September 16, 2026

Managing payroll involves more than issuing paychecks. Business owners must understand their federal and state tax obligations, employee classifications, reporting requirements, and responsibilities under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

To help new and existing business owners better understand these requirements, SCORE is offering a free live online workshop titled “Understanding Payroll Taxes & FLSA Compliance.”

Led by licensed Certified Public Accountant Rick Miller, this interactive workshop will explain essential payroll compliance topics and allow participants to ask questions and receive individual guidance.

Why Payroll Compliance Matters

Payroll compliance can become complicated as a business grows and begins hiring employees or working with independent contractors.

Employers may be responsible for withholding and reporting payroll taxes, filing required forms, maintaining employment records, reporting new hires, and properly classifying workers. Mistakes can lead to filing problems, tax penalties, wage disputes, or other compliance concerns.

This workshop will help business owners become more familiar with their responsibilities at the federal level and within Tennessee.

What You Will Learn

The workshop will discuss the following payroll and employment compliance topics:

Form W-2 and W-3 Compliance

Learn about the role of Forms W-2 and W-3 in reporting employee wages and taxes and why accurate, timely reporting is important.

Form 940 and Form 941 Compliance

Gain a clearer understanding of the federal payroll tax forms commonly used by employers to report unemployment taxes, wages, withholding, Social Security, and Medicare taxes.

Owner Payroll and Business Structure

Explore payroll considerations that may affect business owners depending on the legal structure selected for the business.

New-Hire Reporting

Learn about new-hire reporting responsibilities and why employers should establish an organized process when adding employees.

Employee Benefits

Review important payroll considerations connected with employee benefits and employer-sponsored programs.

Fair Labor Standards Act Compliance

Develop a better understanding of the Fair Labor Standards Act, including the differences between employees and independent contractors and why proper worker classification matters.
